I almost always have yogurt in my fridge. Sometimes it’s regular, sometimes it’s Greek, sometimes it’s full-fat and sometimes it’s low-fat, but it’s always plain. Plain yogurt provides the perfect blank canvas to transform it into whatever you like. Use it in a sweet recipe or a savory recipe and as long as you do it right, it’s always healthy.
Yogurt is a popular fermented dairy product that is created by adding live bacteria to milk and is full of nutrients beneficial to a healthy lifestyle. It is a rich source of protein, calcium and potassium and provides a variety of other essential vitamins and minerals.
The probiotic cultures in yogurt can help with the balance of bacteria needed to maintain a healthy digestive system and can also support your immune system. I have a habit of taking a few spoons full of plain yogurt regularly to help benefit my gut health.
I also recently read that yogurt is a good dairy option for people with lactose intolerance, because the cultures can help break down the lactose, making it easier to digest. If you can’t tolerate dairy though, there’s an excellent variety of non-dairy yogurts available too.
Feel free to try one of my favorite Easy Real Food Recipes made with yogurt, organic if possible, regular or Greek, full-fat or low-fat and enjoy them any season of the year. The following recipe is Nutritious Romaine Smoothie with Sweet Fuji Apple and is perfect for Fall.
